SPORT: Mason McPhee- Feature story follow up

John Therry student Mason McPhee superstar baseballer

Mason McPhee (year 8) recently competed as part of the Macarthur All Stars Representative baseball team at the NSW Baseball State Championships. His team won the championship and travelled to Adelaide where they competed in the National Championships. This team placed 5th at Nationals, a few spots away from winning a ticket to compete at the Arizona world titles. A remarkable effort from Mason and his team. Mason was also awarded the Campbelltown Catholic Club Hotshot award, extract is below.

Mason McPhee’s sporting achievements tend to be very team-based. They can’t not be, because the 14-year-old competes with local teams – baseball, softball and basketball. But, in the midst of that team unity, Mason’s own personal milestones have been shining through lately – from personal best batting averages, to winning “junior player of the year” awards for two different clubs.

That’s why the John Therry Catholic High School student has been named as the latest winner of Campbelltown Catholic Club’s monthly Sports Hot Shot award. That comes with a $500 prize.

“Thank you so much, Catholic Club, for your encouragement,” Mason said. “I’ll be using money to buy a new bat and gloves to help with my baseball.” Mason, from Ruse, is aiming to eventually play college baseball in the United States – a very competitive field.

But his proud, Selena, thinks he’s got the right attitude – aiming for PBs while still being part of a team culture. “Mason has been playing baseball at a representative level for the past 5 years and he is currently in the Macarthur AllStars Junior league Team which has has just won the NSW state championships,” she said.

“This is the first time a junior league team from Macarthur has achieved this honour. Mason and his team will now be competing at the national championships in Adelaide in a bid to become National championships and earn a spot in the Junior League Baseball World Series which will be held in Michigan, USA, in August.”

We all wish Mason and his teammates well. The Club’s Sports Hot Shot award encourages young sportspeople to share their story online for the chance to win cash every month.

Our last student who competed at the NSW baseball state championship was ‘Rhys Dewick (class of 2018). Rhys has stepped out onto the field as a NSWCCC, NSW All Schools and an Australian Schools representative, with his efforts culminating in a recent baseball tour of the US in front of the sport’s top scouts.

On returning to Australia, Dewick has been awarded CEDoW’s highest honour for a male student athlete - the Bishop Mascord Trophy for Most Outstanding Secondary Sportsman at the 2018 CDF Sports Awards.

Nathan competed at the Special Olympics Australian Winter Games in Perisher last Saturday. He came 4th in the first division of advance male ski category and still managed to improve on his times from last year where he competed in the intermediate category. Well done Nathan

Rising Star: Bridget Shearer

Sports Aerobics

On the 15th and 16th of June, Bridget Shearer (Year 7) competed at State competition for Sport Aerobics. Bridget walked away with 2 Gold medals and 1 silver medal. Which gave her an invitation to Nationals on the Gold Coast in August.

Bridget is now the State champion in the following categories: Secondary Yellow Junior Female, Secondary Audition Junior Yellow, further Bridget and her fitness team finished with a Silver medal at the championships. This gives Bridget an invitation to National Championships to the held at The Gold Coast in August.

Bridget will be completing against girls much older than her in Secondary Junior titles (which is for athletes years 7-9).

A fantastic achievement, considering Bridget also competed at the State CCC Cross Country representing the Wollongong Diocese on the 14th of June. John Therry wishes Bridget all the best in all of her routines.

This week our school is in mourning as we pray for Travis Southby and the Southby family. Travis and his sister Olivia have been ever present in our MISA and Diocese teams, both are remarkable athletes and ambassadors of the John Therry community. Travis was a keen AFL player, he was our Cross Country champion in 2018, whilst in 2019 he placed third. At our swimming carnival in 2019 Travis was runner up in Age Champion category for under 14 boys, which shows his versatility at sport.

Our sporting family will keep Travis and his family in our prayers at this difficult time.

JESSICA WHELAN

Congratulations to Jessica Whelan (year 11) who was featured in the Macarthur Advertiser on the 22nd of May. Below is the story captured by Joshua Bartlett.

“One Campbelltown teen is making big strides towards her dream of playing in the AFLW. Jessica Whelan represented the AFL NSW/ACT Rams Australian rules football team at the NAB AFL Women's Under-18s Championship in Coffs Harbour earlier this month. Jessica impressed on the wing for the Rams, which finished the tournament undefeated.

The Rams secured wins over the Gold Coast Suns Academy, Northern Territory and Brisbane Lions Academy. Jessica's highlights included kicking two goals against Northern Territory. The 16-year-old said she enjoyed the chance to compete at a national level. "It was pretty fun and I learned new skills along the way," Jessica said. "It was a step up [to play at that level] and most of the girls played really well."

Jessica plays for the Camden Blues under-18s girls side in the GSJ Western Sydney competition. The John Therry Catholic High School student said she loved to play the sport and dreamed of competing in the AFLW. "I like to play on the wing or a little bit in the middle too," Jessica said. "I like Collingwood, but I would love to play for the GWS Giants one day."

John Therry girls to represent Australia at the Hip Hop International titles

Four John Therry students are set to represent Australia at the Hip Hop International titles at Phoenix Arizona in August. Vanessa Redzic, Jayde Perenara, Sarah Perenara and Charlie Dadd and their mega crew ‘Wolfpack’ claimed the gold medal and the National hip hop title last Sunday, securing their place at the international final.

The girls have trained intensively for the last 6 months with their crew of 30, sacrificing their weekends in the pursuit of the national title. They will travel to the USA in August to compete with over 50 countries for a world title. Wolfpack will come up against The Royal Family, a crew who have achieved international success in music videos and sold out worldwide tours.
