Human Society & Its Environment (HSIE) 

We live in a social, cultural and physical environment that is ever changing and evolving, from historical times to the present.

Stage 4

In Year 7, students’ study both History and Geography, looking at the Ancient World, the places that we live and how they are shaped by physical processes.
Students study the following in History -

Depth Study 1: Investigating the Past
Depth Study 2: The Mediterranean World – Ancient Egypt
Depth Study 3: The Asian World - Ancient China

Students study the following in Geography -

Unit 1: Landscapes and Landforms
Unit 2: Place and Liveability

Year 8 sees students examining how the world has been changed from the Ancient to the Modern World, including the Medieval world, the functions of water in shaping our environment and how our whole world is connected.

Students study the following in History -

Depth Study 4: The Western and Islamic World - The Vikings
Depth Study 5: The Asia-Pacific World - Japan under the Shoguns
Depth Study 6: Expanding Contacts - The Black Death in Asia, Europe and Africa

Students study the following in Geography -

Unit 1: Water in the World
Unit 2: Interconnections

Stage 5

Throughout Year 9, students embark on the making of the Modern world, examining the causes that lead to the World Wars, the impacts on food production and the changing nature of urbanisation.

Students study the following in History -

Depth Study 1: Making a Better World? - The Industrial Revolution
Depth Study 3: Australians at World. World Wars I and II (1914 - 1918, 1939 - 1945)

Students study the following in Geography -

Unit 1: Sustainable Biomes
Unit 2: Changing Places

In Year 10, students continue studying the factors that have transformed Australia, as well as the impact to Australia’s coastlines and what constitutes wellbeing in our lives.

Students study the following in History -

Depth Study 6: College Developed Topic - The Holocaust and Genocide
Depth Study 4: Rights and Freedoms (1945 - present)

Students study the following in Geography -

Unit 1: Environmental Change and Management (including coastal management)
Unit 2: Human Wellbeing

Year 9 and 10 students may also elect to study Commerce and History Elective as part of their electives.

The following core units are studied in Commerce:

  2. The Economic and Business Environment
  3. Employment and Work Futures
  4. Law, Society and Political Involvement

The following options are also studied:

  • Promoting and Selling
  • Running a Business
  • Travel
  • Towards Independence

In the History Elective course, students studying a range of topics ranging from the Ancient World, the Medieval World, the Modern World, Thematic studies and Society studies. Students are engaged in understanding the broader context of history than what is studied in the Mandatory course.
